Potato Gratin Dauphinois

Potato Gratin Dauphinois

Mom found this recipe and served it for Christmas 2019.  She found the recipe online (the original recipe written by Michelle Minnaar is found by clicking the subtitle above.) The combination of the cheese, cream and garlic made this a perfect side dish for a special meal.  A gratin dauphinois is one of the best and most popular French recipes. This creamy potato recipes is best served as a side dish with steak.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold or Red potatoes, peeled-(optional), and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 oz Gruyere cheese, grated

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 320°F
  2. Pour the milk, cream, garlic and nutmeg in a saucepan.
  3. Peel the potatoes and cut them as thinly as possible.
  4. Dry the potato slices thoroughly with a tea towel.
  5. Drop sliced, dry potatoes into cream/milk mixture.
  6. Heat the contents until it reaches boiling pot. Remove from the heat and season to taste.
  7. Butter a 9×9 ovenproof dish.
  8. Pour the potato slices and cream into the dish,
  9. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the dish and sprinkle the cheese on top and bake for another 15 minutes.
  11. Serve with a green salad as a vegetarian lunch or with your favorite French meat dishes. Enjoy!

NOTES

  • The potatoes that work best are those that are more waxy and less starchy, which is why Yukon Golds or Red potatoes are specified.
  • If you decide to double the recipe, use 1.5 times the liquid ingredients.
  • In this case, a mandolin is ideal for slicing the potatoes thinly. A food processor is another good alternative.
  • Traditionally, cheese is not included in this classic French recipe. Parmesan would make a good alternative to this version though!
  • If you don’t use cheese, just cook the potatoes for 1 hour straight.
